Western Massachusetts invasive pest information

Want to know more about these pests?

You’ve probably heard of Chestnut blight and gypsy moth. These are invasive species that damage and kill native trees in our backyards—and they’ve been around for many years. But here in Western Massachusetts, there are new threats to our trees. These threats can be slowed down, or even stopped, before they are widespread- if everyone is aware of how to help.

Right now, the Asian longhorned beetle is a big threat to our area. Authorities know that it is found in the Worcester area, as well as a few small pockets around New York City. If the Asian longhorned beetle makes its way from there into Western Massachusetts on someone’s pile of firewood, we stand to lose all our maples, birches, ash, and other beautiful trees.

The Midwestern states might seem far away, but the emerald ash borer doesn’t think it is too far for a road trip. In the last decade, the borers have traveled from their original infestation areas around Michigan to states as close as upstate New York and parts of Pennsylvania. We can’t let Western Massachusetts become the next victim.

Other less prominent pests can also pack a huge punch when it comes to tree health. Oak wilt, Sirex woodwasp, Sudden Oak Death… they all could come to Western Mass if people are moving wood around. Don’t let it happen. Don’t move firewood.
