You might not think that guacamole is threatened by the movement of firewood, but it is!

The Ambrosia beetle has such a nice name, but it is part of a very serious threat to the avocado industry. You see, the Ambrosia beetle spreads Redbay wilt, which is a fungus that can infect and kill avocado, sassafras, and redbay trees.

The Southern Forest Insect Work Conference just passed a resolution regarding the movement of firewood. Lest you think the issue of moving firewood only applies to Michigan, the SFIWC includes states like Georgia, Florida, and more.

The recent cold weather, plus the ice storm in the New England area, got me thinking about wood heat.

There is nothing wrong with burning firewood, or giving fallen limbs after an ice storm to your next door neighbor for them to burn. I worry sometimes people might get the wrong impression about firewood from this website- we are not against firewood! We are against moving firewood!

Sometimes I feel like we shouldn't move anything at all.

The movement of lots of stuff over long distances, in short time spans, is new to our planet. Firewood, hiking boots, imported fruit, bait buckets, ballast water... and now add to the list- potted plants.
